Essential download: Janelle Monáe
It'll make you want to go clubbing immediately. The coolest girl in R&B, Janelle Monáe, is back and we couldn't be happier.
There ain’t no party like a Janelle Monáe party if her exuberant, Eighties-themed new video is anything to go by. Take a look! It’s a very welcome return for the quirky US R&B star, who is back with her first album in five years, Dirty Computer, out April 28. We definitely Gotta Have It at Muddy HQ – we’re on official countdown to download day.
Infectious lead single Make Me Feel is a ringer for Prince’s Kiss (the late purple one was her mentor), so basically it’s a total banger. And I’m mesmerised by the vid, directed by Solange Knowles’ husband, Alan Ferguson – take me to that nightclub, pronto!
Janelle’s going out OUT costumes are an absolute riot, taking in bonkers sequined lipstick, a yellow leotard, mismatched ankle boots (one white, one red), a bellydancer face mask and see-through trousers. (Much like the Muddy Christmas do, now I come to think about it).
She hasn’t been twiddling her thumbs for the past five years, by the way. She starred in Oscar-winning coming-of-age tale Moonlight and Hidden Figures, the movie that told the story of NASA’s pioneering black female scientists in the 1950s. She’s also obsessed with robots (her 2010 album The ArchAndroid is a doozy – check out Tightrope, my all-time favourite running track) and is known for her collection of super-sharp trouser suits. The lady means business. What’s not to like?
Dirty Computer‘s other single is Django Jane, her #TimesUp anthem which is as witty as it is worthy. ‘Hit the mute button, let the vagina have a monologue,’ is her message to mansplainers. Want to see the video for this one too, while you’re here?
