Review: The Gruffalo, Birmingham Hippodrome
Muddy's Georgina Forsythe took her daughter on a stroll to the deep, dark wood in search of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's The Gruffalo. Here's her verdict...
An immersive show which kept my little girl Ruby wide-eyed and quiet for the whole 55 minutes…..absolute bliss!
It was our first trip together to the Birmingham Hippodrome and a perfect setting for little ones. Entering into the theatre to an absolutely stunning set of the DEEP….DARK….WOOD and the soft sound of birdsong continued until the show started.
Tall Stories’ production was brilliant from start to finish. From the clever use of props, such as the leaves from the trees transforming into colourful butterflies to the witty narrative that kept both children and adults entertained. It really amazed me how with only three actors on stage they took us through the entire journey. The mixture of story and song was the perfect balance for the target audience.
The Gruffalo is a fantastic family treat, and with a running time of just under one hour with no interval, it couldn’t be better for under 7’s. When asked her favourite part Ruby said: “all of it!” and I couldn’t agree more.
