PREVIEW: Wise Children, April 2-6
Flippin heck, how exciting is this! Former Shakespeare's Globe Artistic Director Emma Wise is not only bringing her joyous 5-star Angela Carter adaption to Coventry, but starring in it.
Emma Rice’s adaptation of Angela Carter’s Wise Children is a racy, “life-enhancing” story of showgirls, sex and scandal based on the writer’s final novel about illegitimate twin sisters Nora and Dora Chance, who as they reach their 70th birthday reflect on their life so far. Apparently, it’s a total sauce-fest. We can’t wait to see it!
The theatre director will herself be taking over the role of showgirl Nora from Etta Murfitt for this final leg of their debut national tour in Coventry and Richmond Theatre.
Co-produced by the Belgrade Theatre, Wise Children is her first new production since her departure from Shakespeare’s Globe, where Emma was Artistic Director from 2016-18, and it marks the launch of her new company, Wise Children. She rose to prominence as Artistic Director of Kneehigh Theatre, with whom she worked as an actor and director for 20 years.
Emma Rice said: “We’ve been on such a glorious adventure with our company Wise Children, and I can’t think of a better way to finish our debut tour than stepping into the limelight alongside our wonderful cast to perform in Richmond and Coventry. It’s an honour to share the stage with them and I’m very much looking forward to it!”
We second that emotion!
Wise Children runs at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, Tues April 2 – Sat April 6. Suitable for ages 14+. Tickets here Tel: 024 7655 3055.
