Sunday best: 15 local eateries that serve delicious roasts

Can't be bothered to baste potatoes with goose fat? I hear you. Instead grab your gang and head to one of these local restaurants or gastropubs.

The Cross, Kenilworth

Muddy award-winning and Michelin-starred The Cross doesn’t do things by halves (as you’d expect). If you’re rocking up for lunch there’s chateaubriand on the menu with Yorkshire puds, roasties and veg. It’s not the cheapest at £50 a pop, but my days it’s worth it.

The Hatton Arms, Hatton

We love the Hatton Arms here at Muddy, and its the perfect place to hunker down with a roast. There’s a choice of the staple beef, chicken, special of the day or veggie options – or if you’re a sharing kinda family this is the place for you – a board groaning with different meats and all the trimmings (no, we won’t judge if you have one to yourself).

Hilltop Farm Cafe, Hunningham

Like to know where your food is coming from? This family-run cafe keeps everything local, with all lamb and beef from the onsite farm. Plates are piled high with beef dripping roasties (is there any other way to have them?) and honey roasted veg. You can have two courses for £23 (we’re eyeing up the chicken liver parfait to start) or three courses for £28 (and the raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake for dessert – well, it’d be rude not to.)

The Kings Head, Napton

This place is always popular so make sure you book up first. Sunday roasts come in at £15.50 and there’s a choice of pork, turkey, beef, lamb, blade of beef or a mushroom, leek and brie wellington. If you just can’t choose (and who could blame you?) there’s the option to have a bit of each. Sound’s like our kinda place.

The Antelope, Lighthorne

Real log fire? Check. Glass of red? Check. This place is a gorgeous 18th century pub and is a great little find for whiling away a Sunday afternoon tucking into a roast with all the trimmings. If you don’t fancy traditional fare there’s a standard menu with pub grub.

Anthony’s Bistro, Nuneaton

This is place is small and always popular so make sure you book well in advance. Food is a hearty, homemade affair with seasonal, fresh and local produce and comes in at 3 courses for £25, so a bit of a bargain too!

The Woodsman, Stratford-upon-Avon

The Woodsman is one of the only places which offers fish as an option for Sunday lunch (with a caviar butter sauce no less). It also serves the most delicious cocktails using ingredients foraged by the chefs and has an impressive whiskey selection to boot. Ask the bartender which they’d recommend to go with your food – these guys know their stuff.

The Barn at Berryfields, Meriden

The Barn is a Muddy fave. It’s the perfect place for a big family dinner, date night or a catch up with friends. Meat is reared on their on-site farm and most veg is grown by the family too. Anything not from the Berryfields farm is sourced as locally as possible. This restaurant is also the only place which has Toad-in-the-Hole on the menu – our inner 5-year-olds rejoice.

The Huntsman Carvery, Rugby

This restaurant in the centre of historic Dunchurch village is renowned for its trad meaty carvery. It specialises in rib of beef and also has honey glazed legs of pork and whole fresh turkey crowns. No piffly chain portions here either – expect huge fluffy yorkies and handmade sausages with your meal. Three courses come in at £27.95.

The George Townhouse, Shipston-on-Stour

This elegant, award-winning 15-room Georgian inn is a perfectly proportioned, 18th century beauty where you can enjoy an extensive, varied and reasonably-priced Sunday menu. Nibble on a small plate, share a roast chicken for two or tuck into a roast of the day, including veggie option. If you’re not feeling like a roast lunch, don’t worry, there’s a dirty burger for you to get stuck into.

The Bulls Head, Meriden

If you need a people pleaser this is your place. There’s a vast menu to keep everyone happy including roasts aplenty to steaks, burgers and salads. This cosy little pub is the perfect place to kick back with the family for a catch up, and is great for the kids too.

The Crown, Tiddington

This family-run pub in the centre of the village serves up hearty pub grub and is popular with locals for its Sunday roasts. Gloucester loin of pork with crackling (of course), chicken and a special of the day, which you can also have served with potatoes and gravy in a toasted ciabatta (eek, I know). If you’ve not got a huge appetite there’s a ‘mini roast’ on the menu for just £6, bargain.

The Bower House, Shipston-on-Stour

Ok, so this mains menu isn’t extensive but when a Sunday lunch is this good, it doesn’t need to be. You’ve got a choice of Hereford beef or butternut, wild mushroom and sage nut roast. There’s a lot more choice for starters and desserts – and make sure you leave room for the dark chocolate fondant and honeycomb ice cream.

The Whitestone, Nuneaton

This place recently underwent a refurb and is now serving up what’s known locally as some of the best food around. On Sundays expect a roast with all the trimmings for £10.95 or two courses for £12.95 – so would be rude not to get a bottle of wine too, right?

The Crab Mill, Preston Bagot

The Crab Mill is the epitome of quaint English pub and the building is more than three centuries old. Think tiny-leaded windows, a weathered half timbered exterior, crooked beams and a flagstone floor. The perfect place for cosying down for an afternoon of good food and drink. There’s an extensive roast menu, and the drinks list is pretty good too.
