Unsure which wines are best to crack out at Christmas time? Or just looking for an alternative to your usual festive tipple? Luckily, Warwick-based wine doyenne Lindsay Poole has picked out the perfect bottle for every special day across the holiday season – read on to find out what to buy when, and how to order.
For many people Christmas Dinner is the most important meal of the year and it can be made extra special by matching it with some delicious wines. We always choose Champagne as an aperitif and will usually accompany it with some tasty nibbles.
The Champagne can be a Grand Marque one, with some of our favourites being Pol Roger Brut, Bollinger Special Cuvee and R de Ruinart. But more usually we serve a Champagne from one of the smaller grower/producers such as Lallier or Marc Hebrart with our favourites being either the Lallier Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut or their Grand Cru Grande Reserve Brut or Marc Hebrart Cuvee de Reserve 1er Cru.
With a light starter such as seafood or prawn salad we would enjoy a single vineyard Gavi del Commune di Gavi such as Nuovo Quadro from Piedmont in Italy. Then with roast Sirloin of Beef and Dauphinoise potatoes we would serve either a good quality Côtes du Rhône Villages or Lirac, Gigondas or Châteauneuf du Pape all of which are big rich Rhône reds. Or we would enjoy a robust organically made Priorat from Spain.
New Year’s Eve
Well, we will definitely be glad to see the end of 2020 so to celebrate we will enjoy some Sixteen Ridges Signature Cuvee from nearby Herefordshire. We usually end the year with a leisurely meal of some of our favourite dishes which would include a starter of scallops with which we would drink Albariño which is the perfect grape variety with any seafood. Two of our favourites are Pazo Rosqueira and Diluvio.
Our main course of Fillet Steak with green peppercorn sauce would be accompanied by Hermandad Malbec from Mendoza in Argentina which is rich and multi layered with ripe mulberry fruit and subtle oak.
New Year’s Day
A late morning brunch is the order of the day here accompanied by a glass of a Gran Reserva Brut Nature Cava such as Marrugat. This is a really elegant style of fizz from Spain which has been bottle aged for 48 months so has some lovely brioche notes and a fine mousse.
