Cheers to Newbold Spirit!

New independent Warwickshire distillery Newbold Spirit wins a triple silver in the IWSC spirit awards 2020.

Congratulations to small Leamington Spa based independent distillery Newbold Spirit; it has just become triple silver medallists at the International Wine and Spirit Competition – the IWSC 2020 awards!

IWSC judges are world-renowned experts from across the global spirits trade. Many judges are also distillers themselves, providing a unique opportunity for independent peer feedback so, the company run by husband and wife team, Ian and Victoria Black, is delighted with this amazing achievement in their very first year of trading and in .

IWSC use the ‘double-blind’ method, which means samples are tasted in pre-poured numbered glasses to ensure our experts never see a bottle. Each spirit is judged by a whole panel in sync, allowing for group discussions.

The local distillery’s London Dry Gin received a whopping 92-point score, just 3 points off a gold medal. Judges said: “Newbold London Dry Gin is an accomplished spirit with good balance, strong character and good complexity. A classic example of its style, delicate on the nose with layers of fresh herbs filling the senses. The palate is wonderfully dry, crisp and well-integrated.”

In addition, their Spiced Rum and soon to be released Dark Rum also delighted the judges receiving 90 points and 91 points respectively. The judges’ verdict: “Newbold Dark Rum is bright and fragrant with intense notes of orange peel, tropical fruit and oak. Rich and complex with a long dry finish.”

Ian and Victoria came up with the idea while walking their dog on Newbold Comyn in Leamington Spa, spurred on by Victoria’s redundancy last summer. Over lockdown the couple have been incredibly busy and excitingly are about to launch Newbold Cherry Gin. They’ve been working with the Master Distiller at Union (makers of Two Birds) and have created a London dry gin with sweet cherry tones that not only tastes amazing it’s fabulously pink!

Their labels have all been re-designed too by award winning designers at Label Apeel (who designed Cotswold Gin & Duppy Share Rum).
