Burning Barn Rum

On the back of our recent best UK indie drinks feature, we have some more exciting local news about a West Midlands based craft rum celebrating its first major supermarket listing.

Solihull’s family-owned, Burning Barn Rum this month secured a contract to supply 74 Tesco stores throughout the region with two of its spirits: a Spiced Rum (70cl, 40% ABV) and a Honey and Rum Liqueur (70cl, 29% ABV).

Together with their Smoked Rum, all three drinks are also stocked in Harvey Nichols, Harrods and in more than 100 independent retailers across the West Midlands.

Burning Barn Rum was set up by Solihull entrepreneur Katherine Jenner, a 2019 Food & Drink regional finalist in the Great British Entrepreneur Awards, after a fire destroyed the barn that housed her father-in-law’s toffee apple business in 2015.

Determined to forge something positive from the tragedy Burning Barn Rum was born launching in 2017 with a fiery Spiced Rum and a Smoked Rum. Last year, they introduced the Honey and Rum Liqueur, which marries Guyanese rum with local English honey, some of which is sourced from their own beehives.

It’s made using the finest molasses in column and pot stills at the Diamond Distillery just outside Guyana’s capital, Georgetown aged in the Caribbean in American Oak bourbon casks, before being shipped to the UK where the rums are flavoured, filtered and bottled on the family farm in Eastcote, near Hampton-in-Arden, Solihull.

Burning Barn Rum’s founder Katherine is delighted about the latest listing. She says: “Burning Barn Rum was born from an incredibly difficult time for our family, but that simply makes every win even more special. My father-in-law’s determination to rebuild his toffee apple business after the devastating blaze, inspired my husband and myself to take the plunge and set up our own rum brand.

“As rum fans ourselves, we wanted to create something completely unique to anything on the market; creating a true craft spirit made with entirely natural ingredients and no added sugar or additives”.
