Three Bar & Bistro, Rugby

Three's already attracting an artsy crowd. Co-owner Lisa Sharma, a painter and decorator and clearly with a good eye for decor runs the restaurant with her chef-musician-composer husband Vick.

Have you been to the new cafe-bar opposite Lawrence Sherriff boy’s grammar school in Rugby?

It’s been quietly running for three months now but I finally made it down during half-term and loved it.

Three is a small, stylishly decked out independent family-run bistro, cafe, bar and cakery with furniture. I love the navy and white colour scheme,  minimalist interiors and those lampshades. Co-owner Lisa Sharma is a painter and decorator and clearly has a good eye for decor. She runs the restaurant with her chef -musician-composer husband Vick, who previously ran his own restaurant in France, in a village outside Toulouse.

Breakfast is served until 12. There’s Thick American pancakes with lemon and sugar or bacon and maple syrup from £4, the ‘three’ breakfast – Poached egg & beans with 2 bacon rashers, Cumberland sausages & garlic sauteed mushrooms (£7.50), the ‘three’ breakfast sausage sarnie and Boiled Egg & Soldiers.

Starters, Light Bites and Salads range from Homemade soup of the day to Houmous & Pitta and Roquefort salad. Lunch has a more of French bistro feel with two healthy, freshly cooked specials of the day, Sharing Platters, Baked Camembert and Ploughman’s.

You also can book for the Friday Evening dinner menu and the bar serves wine, beers, spirits and cocktails.

Desserts and cakes include House Brownie, Brownie sundae, Affagato (vanilla ice cream with an expresso shot) and ice creams. Lisa and her mum Suzy bake all the yummy looking cakes in the centre island. They look so pretty, next to a big bunch of fresh spring tulips.

I’d been wanting to come here for a while and popped in last week after a trip to the opticians with my 8-year-old. We had a lovely light lunch. My Greek salad tasted very fresh and authentic (£8.95).

She gobbled up a children’s portion of the Pasta Special of the Day and enjoyed a homemade coffee and walnut cupcake for dessert.

It’s a light, bright minimalist experience with fresh salads, crisp wines and a kind of relaxed gastro café feel – perfect for a girly lunch or a business meeting. A cafe like Three will definitely appeal to mums and prams in the morning for coffee and homemade cakes; casual diners and business catch-ups over lunch, and more intimate private dining events. Three’s already attracting an artsy crowd…Art featured on the walls is for sale. “One of our customers told us his partner, a Russian lady, was an artist and her paintings fitted in perfectly,” said Lisa. Future plans include live music and art sales.

Vick and Lisa are just taking advance bookings for their first Sunday Lunch Club on Sunday March 5. Lunch is at 1pm and diners can choose a main for £11.95 or 2 courses for £14.95. Roast chicken will be served up with special treats including cauliflower & leek gratin, roasted chantenay carrots, roasted new potatoes and cumin butternut squash. And there are 3 desserts choices: Homemade brownie with whipped cream; Apple crumble with cream, ice cream or custard or a Brownie sundae.

It was quite quiet when we arrived around 11.40am as we’d missed the breakfast rush and just before lunchtime, so I could grab a quick chat with Vick.

The concept is simple, to combine the best element French, British and World foods to produce freshly-cooked healthy, great tasting comfort food.

He said: “One of our speciality dishes is Spicy Pan Fried Fish served in a traditionally Indian way with rice, raita & pickled onions but presented in a way that’s high-end. We have a brilliant apprentice chef from Warwickshire College, Ziporah Musoke, and she’s absolutely brilliant!”

Originally from Notting Hill, London, Vick used to be in electronica band called Othello and still composes music. He recently spent 10-days in Mumbai where he had been working on a film score for a Hindi film.

He said: “At my restaurant in France we served home-cooked French food, but found there was a lot of demand for Indian food at private parties.

“In 2014 Steven Spielberg produced a film, The 100ft Journey starring Helen Mirren, which was actually filmed in our village. One day I bumped into the director Lasse Hallstrom in the street and opened up the restaurant just for him, as we were closed that day.

“The film was about an English family, who opened an Indian restaurant in rural France, and it mirrored exactly what I was doing. I’ve since written a book about my own experiences in rural France called The 100ft Difference, which I hope to get published.”


Good for: Super fresh brekkies, lunches and cakes made by co-owner Lisa and her mum with a British/French and World food menu in a stylish bistro setting with licensed bar. Really handy for parents of pupils at Lawrence Sheriff. Lovely friendly, homely service and new Sunday Lunch Club. Kids will especially like the home-made cupcakes and Brownie sundaes.

Not for: Anyone expecting a peaceful rural setting. Three is most definitely urban. Located in a row of shops next to a Sainsbury’s Local, opposite the boys grammar, in a part of town crying out for a supercool sit-down cafe & bar.
