Put a Ring on it!
Warwickshire jewellery designer Tara Osborne is one of the few who can lay claim to actually putting a ring on Beyonce's finger (apart from Jay Z, obviously...)
Queen Bey’s penchant for bling is legendary. Over the years, the singer has accumulated an impressive collection of opulent crowns, statement necklaces, custom hoops and even a double silver ring designed by our very own Muddy award-winner, Tara Osborne. Tara, who works from her studio in Ettington, near Stratford-upon-Avon, is herself getting married this summer, so who better to ask for the hottest wedding jewellery trends of 2019 in our bridal-themed Q&A?
What are the big trends in wedding jewellery at the mo?
Pearls & shells! These have made a massive comeback this year, in creams, whites and peachy tones. The perfect colour palette to suit a white dress. Also, wedding jewellery used to be quite simple and classic but statement earrings/necklaces are making their way to the forefront of wedding style. Because if you can’t make a statement on your wedding day then, when can you?! I’ll be wearing a mixture of gold and silver too as this is what I do day to day, it’s all about expressing yourself and being the true YOU on your big day!
Can you tell us about some of the wedding commissions you’ve received?
I love when a wedding commission comes through, I’m working on some lovely ones for this wedding season which I can’t show just yet but follow my Instagram for updates. There’s more pressure with a wedding bespoke piece as I want it to be absolutely perfect for their special day, but the feeling that they’ve chosen to come to me for such an important thing fills me with joy. I’ve made so many beautiful gifts for Mother of the Bride, Bridesmaids, for the Bride herself & even Grooms gifts. Whether they’re personalized with engraving or charms or simply perfect for the colour scheme I make sure they’re extra special for your day.
Congratulations on your own imminent nuptials! A little bird told us you’re designing some jewellery for the big day, which sounds very exciting…
We’re getting married at Halford Church near Shipston-on-Stour and then Lapstone Barn in Chipping Campden for our reception on the 8th August & we’re so excited! Less than 4 months now! Yes, I’m going to be making myself a few pieces, they’re in the design stages at the moment but I’m thinking BIG earrings for the reception featuring some quirky pearls and potentially also some ankle decoration. It’s a really exciting prospect, being able to make my own wedding jewellery and make it JUST perfect. But surprisingly a lot of pressure as I’m my worst critic.
Are you wearing any other sentimental pieces of jewellery?
In the church, I’m planning on wearing my late special Granny’s gold opal earrings and necklace so she’s there with us on the day. This part of jewellery means a lot to me, the amount of meaning it can hold.
Let’s talk celebs – is it true Beyoncé is a fan of your designs?
I can’t believe it but yes! She wore one of my original double ring designs back in my first year of business which was pretty incredible, I still pinch myself about that moment!
Which jewellery designers are you a fan of?
I adore the designer who created my engagement ring with Nik, so much so that I’m designing my wedding band with her. I know it will be my perfect ring, a bit different to the standard band to fit with my not so standard engagement ring. Her name is Mei-li Rose and she’s just launched a new brand too, Buff Jewellery, which is also gorgeous. I admire so many jewellery designers, so hard to name them all.
What’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned through running your own indie biz?
That everything comes in ebbs and flows, different parts of the business flourish at different times and you’ve just got to keep at it and remember why you started, so not get lost in the little things. Also looking back on all you’ve achieved over the years is a real humbler.
How has being a 2018 Muddy Award winner for Best Jewellery Store helped at all?
It has positively transformed my business! There’s a noticeable change in my workload, and I feel validation to have such a great title supporting me! I am so thankful to Muddy’s for the change it has had on my business, I think it’s the recognition people need to trust to buy from a company, so it’s just been fabulous!!
You originally studied English at uni, do you still get to read a lot and who are your fave writers?
I try to read as much as possible and not just Instagram! Give me a crime thriller on a sun lounger with lots of twists and turns and I’m a happy girl. My favourite kind of book to fuel my vivid imagination!
Did you have to undergo any training/qualifications before you embarked on a career in jewellery design?
I went on internships with two amazing jewelers in a year out in the middle of degree and learned so many invaluable skills with them, I then went back to finish my degree and after uni honed my skills to create my brand. Really, I’m learning new things almost every day.
What inspires your work?
Inspiration can sometimes be hard when you’re running all aspects of your business not just the creative side. But really inspiration comes from what I would wear, my sub-conscious is very proactive too as most of my new designs come to me in dreams. Bizarre I know but I just go with it.
What’s a signature Tara outfit?
Colour, comfort and quirk! I love to express myself with my clothing, it really is true if you like your outfit your mood and confidence improves. I also dress for myself, to make me happy, which is a great feeling.
Where’s your happy place?
Ooh, so many to choose from. Around my favourite people, my childhood home, dog walks, special holidays, visiting new places. Just enjoying the richness of life is my happy place!
What’s your dream honeymoon destination?
We always thought we’d go somewhere completely secluded, all white and lie out for two weeks but we decided actually we may get bored. So, we’ve opted for a trip around beautiful Portugal, our favourite country to go to together and somewhere I’ve been going to at my families’ place since I was two. It’s an incredibly special place for us and our families and to explore new places is something I can’t wait to share with Nik. Some relaxation in there too!
Complete this sentence, “In five years’ time, I’ll be…”
…as happy & thankful for everything I have as I am now, and hopefully still doing what I love – making jewellery and creating!
