Exercise bunnies, prepare to be wowed by the magic of, err, bamboo, thanks to this sustainable Devonshire fitness & leisurewear eco brand.
So I’ve now completely run out of excuses not to exercise. Thanks a bunch, Team BAM Clothing, no really, thanks; you and your (genius) bamboo creations have just caused me and the sofa to go through a very messy break-up. Out went my old, see-through multi-purpose leggings a few weeks ago and in came a delivery of spanky new gear and suddenly I’m officially ‘active’; and yes, yes, yes, alright, I’m feeling quite good while I’m at it, too.
I mean, we’re all over eco-brands at Muddy, but who knew that bamboo was such an awesome material for clothes, especially ones that need to be comfy and supportive when you’re stretching into all kinds of crazy shapes? The founder of this cool British brand, David Gordon, that’s who. Totally ahead of the curve he launched BAM in 2006, after trekking across Greenland (as you do) and deciding he wanted to come up with a viable and environmentally sustainable business idea. In the last ten years, BAM has emerged as a brand that’s fun, fashionable and socially responsible – and its roots are in Devon, Plymouth to be precise.
It might seem a bit off the wall, but when you dig and delve into the benefits of bamboo, you realise it’s not surprising that it lends itself so well to clothing. It turns out that bamboo fabric is super-soft (think what cashmere is to wool) and is brilliant for allergy prone skin and anti-static. It’s also temperature-regulating and cuts out nearly all harmful UV rays, protecting you when the sun decides to join you on your workout. Plus, you can say goodbye to stinky exercise gear, because bacteria and bamboo don’t get on and the fabric is moisture wicking, too. Pretty cool, no? Basically the only thing bamboo doesn’t do, as far as I can tell, is absorb fat. Which is a shame.
The BAM clothing range spans the whole wardrobe, from underwear to casual daywear, lounge clothes and accessories, for both men and women. But its activewear range is, frankly, brilliant and, for the past six weeks, I’ve been wearing, washing and, basically, living in my new kit whenever I can get away with it – it’s that comfy.
Have a looksie – these are my Enduro Bamboo Leggings (not my bum pictured inside those, sadly), ideal all-rounders when it comes to exercise. Now, on a purely practical and fashion-conscious level, these full-length leggings fit brilliantly, sculpt the butt and the deep waistband holds my rolls in place. The Enduro fabric is more heavyweight and opaque, which means more support, too. I feel much more confident stepping outside the house, without the fear of bum wobble, or having a ‘see-through’ moment. I mean, I know it sounds ridiculous, but you know when you wear something new and it gives you a little spring in your step? That. I love the colour, too (Graphite Space Dye) and a whole new range of colours and prints are about to drop in the new collection, which launches at the end of Feb (a few sneaky pics to whet your appetite above).
And here’s my Serena Top, another snuggler in the soft stakes, with a wrap across the front, flattering but also great for women who feel less comfortable baring all in a skimpy vest. This one’s lovely for yoga and pilates.
And as for my Cool Down Sweat Top, cooling down or not, I can see this one getting lots of use on weekend beach walks and when you just feel like you want to sling on something super-cosy. Love the concealed zip pockets, too, for when you’re running and want somewhere to put your phone.
Just so any sporty males or teens in your life don’t feel left out they do men’s active-wear too.
Considering how clever these clothes are, they’re priced really reasonably, I think. And, worth mentioning, that when there’s a sale to be had, these guys don’t just skim off a few quid – they really go for it. Excitingly, a whole new Spring 2018 range is about to launch at the end of Feb, which means lots more styles, colours and patterns and more of the best-sellers. You’ll be hearing more about this brand, because we LOVE ’em and reckon you will, too.
