<p>Looking for a new car but don&#8217;t know where to start? I hear ya! It feels like a proverbial minefield out there with considerations like boot capacity, running cost and manoeuvrability high on the agenda (for me anyway&#8230; I put colour pretty high up there too!) Now we also have to think about conventional vs electric or hybrid, Gawd help us! Couple with this, it&#8217;s one of your biggest purchasing decisions (unless you also happen to be toying with a five star break in the Maldives&#8230;), so perhaps it&#8217;s time you drafted in the experts? </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-first-thing-s-first-what-should-i-be-looking-for">FIRST THING&#8217;S FIRST &#8211; WHAT SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR?</h2>

<p>According to the guys at BMW you need to look out for several things when deciding on an electric car and they need to fit into your circumstances more than a petrol or diesel would. If you&#8217;re travelling longer distances you need to keep an eye on the range &#8211; some cars like the <a href="https://www.rybrookwarwickbmw.co.uk/cars/x-series/ix3/">BMW iX3</a> (from £62,865) will do 285 miles before a top-up is required (and it was recently voted Best SUV to drive by What Car (handily it will fit in the kids, the dogs and the shopping too)). You also need to consider how you would charge it and if you can charge it at home, are there rapid chargers nearby (these boost your battery up to 100 per cent in around an hour) plus you need to consider how the car will mainly be used, eg for family holidays, the school run or commuting (more on this later).</p>

<p>We all know electricity bills have gone up and unsurprisingly so has the cost at public charging points. However it still works out cheaper to have an electric car if you have charging facilities at home (which can be installed for around £500), you have solar panels or if you can charge your car at work. </p>



<p>Where electrics are much cheaper is maintenance costs &#8211; because there aren&#8217;t really any! There&#8217;s no need to book in for oil changes or other engine components, and electrics have regenerative brakes (yes, that&#8217;s a thing) so you don&#8217;t need to replace them as often.</p>



<p>If you&#8217;re still not sold, hybrid is a handy middle ground as it bridges the gap between petrol, diesel and electric, and all BMW hybrids niftily charge themselves while you drive.  </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">WHICH CAR WILL MATCH MY LIFESTYLE?</h2>



<p>If you have a short commute or are just going to be zipping about on the school run or shopping trips then the world is your oyster! Pretty much any of the BMW range would be great, with all the electric options having loads of boot and interior space perfect for families of three to five. </p>



<p>For commuters the <a href="https://www.rybrookwarwickbmw.co.uk/cars/x-series/ix3/">BMW iX3</a> or the <a href="https://www.rybrookwarwickbmw.co.uk/cars/bmw-i/the-i4/">i4</a> (£53,480) has a high range of 366 miles for a long drive, but if you&#8217;re going to be doing very high mileage maybe look away from electric vehicles (even if they are super cool). </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-clock-s-ticking">THE CLOCK&#8217;S TICKING</h2>

<p>In 2030 the sale of all petrol and diesel cars will be banned as part of government&#8217;s &#8216;green industrial revolution&#8217;. After that time the only cars and vans you can find in showrooms will be fully electric. </p>
