Outdoor fun at Compton Verney this Christmas
Warwickshire's Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park has lined up some brilliant kid-friendly events including a winter fire garden, woodland trails and a new Christmas present trail.
Have you been asking yourself where can I take the kids under Tier 3 restrictions?
This Christmas Compton Verney Art Gallery and Park, near Kineton, Warwick, has come up with a great outdoor, winter itinerary – and for the first time ever, the 120 acres of Grade II-listed Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown parkland will be open daily for exercise throughout Christmas and New Year. Woo-hoo!
Make the most of this beautiful setting in rural Warwickshire at one of these family-orientated events:
Winter Woodland Trail, every Tues – Sun until Sun Jan 3 2021
The festive fun gets underway with this magical trail featuring a host of beautiful, woven willow animal sculptures, including a fantastic fox, cute hedgehog and more. Pause by each one to create your own animal tale based on the character in front of you.
You can also follow the terrific new, illuminated Tree Trail lighting the way as you stroll from the Welcome Centre, through the woodland coppice and up to the magnificent 18th-century house.
Several large, architectural trees have been festooned by staff with lights and stars up to an absolute showstopper of a Christmas tree, next to the Park’s iconic boulder.
See the Giant 3-D Advent Calendar
Artists from Warwickshire Open Studios have transformed the Robert Adam-designed Grade I-listed Georgian mansion house into an oversized 3-D Advent Calendar. Twenty-four digital art works have been installed in the windows of the house and are being revealed each day by a post on Twitter @ComptonVerney, Facebook ComptonVerney Instagram @Compton_Verney After Christmas Day it will remain on display until Jan 6.
Brand-new Christmas Present Trail, Tues Dec 15 – Sun Jan 3
Littlies will love helping to recover a sackful of presents accidentally dropped over Compton Verney’s Park by Santa when heading back to the North Pole. There will be positively loads of them to find – some suspended from the trees and one apparently even landed on the roof – though health and safety won’t be too impressed by that!
Although the main House will be closed the Welcome Centre and gift shops will still be open (until 7pm on Sat Dec 12), until 7pm when warming chilli and specialty festive drinks will be served at The Garden Shed Café.
Online Textile Fair, Fri Dec 11 – Sun Dec 13
No longer a ‘live’ event, this will now be an online show with browse handmade products from an array of local artists, crafters and makers from home. Compton is planning to run a live Textile Fair in March 2021.
See Walk the Plank’s spectacular after-dusk Fire Garden installation, Wed Dec 16-Sun Dec 20
A flame-filled highlight of December will be this installation of Walk the Plank’s hand-crafted, intricate fire sculptures will suddenly transform different parts of our grounds into places of wonder, where you can wander through, or stand and watch, close enough to feel the heat.
The grounds will be open daily, between 10am and 4.30pm, throughout the Christmas and New Year break giving perfect opportunity to get out of the house, and exercise with the kids/dog for a much-needed ramble. Grounds Day Passes are £5 per adult and free for children aged up to18). Buy from the Welcome Centre on arrival.
