Head over to one of Britain's most haunted castles this Halloween if you dare...
Scare yourself silly this Halloween at one of the most haunted UK castles on the edge of Warwickshire! Well-preserved Tamworth Castle dates back 900 years and you can still explore a maze of intact rooms, halls, chambers and ancient walkways with Saxon, Norman, Tudor and Victorian influences.
This small, stunning Grade I listed Norman castle has even been painted in a watercolour by the J M W Turner in 1830. But over the years visitors have reported strange paranormal activity including the sightings of two ghosts known as the White Lady, who is said to walk the castle looking for her murdered lost love, and the Black Lady, a 9th Century nun and founder of Polesworth Abbey.
OCT HALF-TERM & HALLOWEEN
During half-term, Mon Oct 23-Fri Oct 27, the castle will be ‘haunted’ by spooky characters with challenges to complete and a special Children’s Halloween Evening after-hours on Sat Oct 28 from 5pm to 8.30pm. All the family can dress-up in their scariest costumes to enjoy the ghostly goings-on. An extremely popular event, it’s advised to book a slot in advance (tamworthcastlefriends).
For the serious ghost hunters, there’s a night-time All Hallows’ Eve’ Ghost Search, on Tues Oct 31 from 7.30pm-midnight where you can walk the Medieval Castle with vigils in reputedly haunted rooms.
BONFIRE NIGHT & LANTERN-ORY
Tamworth Castle is known locally for its awe-inspiring firework display in the castle grounds – with plenty of time to explore the Castle beforehand. This year’s celebrations are held on Sat Nov 4, 5-8pm. Castle Grounds activities start at 6pm with fireworks at 8pm. New this November is Lantern-ory – family-friendly lantern-lit stories around the castle on Sat Nov 18. The story is revealed in parts as families and visitors tour through the lantern-lit castle. There’s family slots every 30 mins from 5-7.30pm and half-hourly adult-themed slots from 8-9.30pm.
