New openings

Like getting a bit messy while eating your food – I mean wearing a bib, juice dripping down your arm and chin messy? If not then look away now. Seafood City has just opened in The Arcadian serving up Cajun-style seafood boils brimming with lobster, shrimp, crab and heaps more. It’s from the guys behind Vietnamese Street Kitchen, so you know you’re onto something good.

Cool Jewellery Quarter bar 1000 Trades has launched a new venture, headed up by Masterchef winner Daniel Lee. Neighbourhood tearoom, bar and kitchen 1000 Trades On The Park is in Bearwood at Lightwoods House and open now. Think good coffee, natural wine and a delicious menu of proper pub grub. Oh, and it’s dog friendly too.

Alex Claridge, the brains behind The Wilderness has just opened ‘alternative restaurant’ Albatross Death Cult in Newhall Square. It’s an intimate joint with seating for just 14, with 12 courses served at £88 a head which he says is just enough to cover costs. It’s described as being a more ‘raw, unedited, stripped-back’ version to his other restaurant, and is mostly seafood and coastal ingredients.

Flight Club aficionados, there’s something new coming for you! Spinners is opening in Touchwood in Solihull on July 12. There’s games like crazy golf, shuffleboard, darts and bowling, and the obligatory artisan pizzas and cocktails to enjoy while you try not to let your competitive streak get the better of you. We’ve all been there!

Brummy Bake Off stars

You might have seen some familiar faces if you’re a Bake Off: The Professionals fan. Brummy chocolatiers and patisserie Soko Patisserie have been taking part in the show serving up show-stopping sweets and desserts. They’re smashing it so far, we’re betting on Brum to go the distance!

Bargain restaurant menus to book quick!

There’s a whole host of awesome foodie joints taking place in this year’s Birmingham Restaurant Festival (1-31 Aug, get it in your diaries people!) and the menus have just been announced. Each place puts on a great value set or tasting menu so you can try their mouth-watering dishes for a smidge of the cost. Think everyone from 670 Grams and Purnells to Trentina and Chapter – get in quick these tables fill up fast!

Moving!

Plant Me in Rugby scooped Muddy’s award for best cafe last year. We (and our readers!) love their cafe serving up homemade food and that you can stock up on houseplants while you’re there too! No surprise then that they’re having to move to a bigger site which now they’re referring to as ‘The Jungle’. We hear there’ll be a parent and toddler area, more plants (yes!), outdoor seating, ice creams and be opening on Sundays too. Eek, we can’t wait. The existing cafe on Norman Road is still running until the new joint opens – stay tuned to their socials for updates.
