You can&#8217;t go far wrong with Hampton, packed full of rural character despite being a hop, skip and a jump to the city via train, making it a popular option for commuters who crave a little pastoral idyll. The 12th century church, imposing Hampton Manor (once home to Sir Robert Peel, now a primo foodie destination) and medieval packhorse bridge all give Hampton a historical air.</p>

<p>Okay, let&#8217;s get the big one out of the way: the village&#8217;s destination hotel, Hampton Manor, is home to two outstanding restaurants, all of which pull in tourists for miles around. Michelin-starred <a href="https://hamptonmanor.com/grace-savour/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Grace &amp; Savour</a>, overlooking the Walled Garden, serves up sustainable home-grown dinners on Thursdays to Saturdays, as well as a fifteen-course tasting menu; laidback <a href="https://hamptonmanor.com/smoke/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Smoke</a> specialises in soulfood four-course menus courtesy of MasterChef The Professionals 2019 Champion, Stuart Deeley. </p>



<p>Want something a little more down to earth? Friendly 17th century inn <a href="https://www.thewhitelioninn.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The White Lion</a> is the perfect pitstop after a country ramble, while local caff <a href="https://www.facebook.com/sandwichesatnumbersix/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sandwiches at No. 6</a> is the place to grab a sarnie and a wedge of homemade cake. If you don&#8217;t mind the drive, there&#8217;s recently refurbished <a href="https://www.theboat-catherinedebarnes.co.uk">The Boat</a> at Catherine de Barnes, with its glorious outdoor covered terrace. Independent eatery <a href="https://www.foxhamptonlane.co.uk/">Fox Hampton Lane</a> offers simple, seasonal food. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shop">SHOP </h2>



<p>Village life inevitably means you&#8217;ll have to head further afield for the best of the shopping, but you have the essentials on hand: namely, a village shop, a wine shop, fab little deli <a href="https://www.hamptoncornershop.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Corner Shop</a>, and the bakery at <a href="https://www.instagram.com/bakery_hamptonmanor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hampton Manor</a>. Plus, ten minutes&#8217; drive away is <a href="https://heyfarmshops.co.uk/07294441/The_Barn_At_Berryfields">The Barn at Berryfields</a>, an independent family-run restaurant, bakery, butchery and deli, with picture-perfect views over rolling countryside.</p>

<p>Obviously, you&#8217;ve got all the amenities of Solihull on your doorstep (including the restaurants, bars and shops of the <a href="https://touchwoodsolihull.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Touchwood</a> shopping complex), but head south for around 35 mins in the car and you&#8217;re slap-bang in Stratford-on-Avon, birthplace of Shakespeare and the home of the <a href="https://www.rsc.org.uk/whats-on/in/stratford/?from=ql" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Royal Shakespeare Company</a> and theatre. <a href="https://www.warwick-castle.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Warwick Castle</a> is even closer than that at under a half-hour&#8217;s drive (perfect for keeping the kids entertained over the school holidays), and nearby <a href="https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/kenilworth-castle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kenilworth Castle and its Elizabethan Garden</a> is always worth a mosey. National Trust members will be pleased to hear that <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/packwood-house">Packwood House</a>, <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/charlecote-park">Charlecote Park</a>, <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/coughton-court">Coughton Court</a>, and <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/hanbury-hall">Hanbury Hall</a> are all reachable in under 45 mins. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-culture">CULTURE</h2>



<p>Culture vultures are best off headed into either Solihull or Birmingham city centre to get their fix. You&#8217;ve got big hitters like <a href="https://www.birminghammuseums.org.uk/bmag">Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery</a>, <a href="https://www.birminghammuseums.org.uk/blakesley">Blakeley Hall Museum</a> and <a href="https://www.theherbert.org/">Herbert Art Gallery</a>, which hosts contemporary art exhibitions and social history talks, while theatre buffs will find plenty of shows to tickle their fancy at Solihull&#8217;s <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.thecoretheatresolihull.co.uk" target="_blank">The Core</a> and <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/whats-on/solihull/the-dovehouse-theatre" target="_blank">Dovehouse</a> theatres. </p>

<p>The village&#8217;s only primary school, George Fentham Endowed Primary School, is happily rated Outstanding (although their last Ofsted inspection was nearly 10 years ago now). <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute">COMMUTE</h2>



<p>The village benefits from its own train station, which will get you into New Street within twenty minutes, or to London Euston in just over two hours. If you prefer to drive, Birmingham city centre is under half an hour away, while London falls somewhere between 2 to 3 hours. </p>
