For modern British foods head to <a href="https://www.verbenakitchen.co.uk">Verbena</a> and <a href="https://www.soi1268.co.uk">Soi 1268</a> for Thai street food. Love cake and brunch? <p>With a village-y vibe, don’t expect to find any high street giants here; instead it is home to a small number of independents, including artisanal bakeries, coffee shops, greengrocers, florists, craft breweries and cocktail bars. As well as <a href="https://www.facebook.com/GrannysAtticBespoke">Granny’s Attic Bespoke</a>&nbsp;boutique which gives new life to pre-loved furniture, so you can pick up something really unique, and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/sweetmeat_inc/">Sweetmeat</a>, serving up delicious handmade fudge. </p>



<p>For an eco-friendly fix check out&nbsp;<a href="https://www.thecleankilo.co.uk/">The Clean Kilo</a>. Tom Pell and his partner Jeanette are the masterminds behind Birmingham’s first zero-waste supermarket. Their simple concept has really taken off, and customers bring their own containers to buy what they need, by weight. Wine loves put <a href="https://www.stirchleywines.co.uk">Stirchley Wines</a> on speed dial. For a hardcore shopping fix, Birmingham is England’s second largest city, so head into town and you can find all the big-name stores alongside esoteric boutiques. Allow plenty of time to explore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bullring.co.uk/">The Bullring</a>&nbsp;and Grand Central too.</p>

<p>Stirchley has probably one of the closest knit communities in this neck of the woods. There&#8217;s not much these guys aren&#8217;t doing! We love the regular <a href="https://stirchleycommunitymarket.wordpress.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stirchley Community Market</a> run by local residents stocked full of Stirchley businesses. Expect anything from local fruit and veg to freshly-baked bread, arts and crafts and heaps more. A former Edwardian baths in the town centre has now been converted into a community hub and has everything on from film nights to fitness classes, choir sessions and table tennis games. Over at the local library you&#8217;ll find free art classes and clubs.</p>

If you prefer water to land there’s&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sailbirmingham.com/stand-up-paddleboarding/">paddleboarding</a>&nbsp;at Edgbaston Reservoir or take a ride around Brum’s canals on&nbsp;<a href="https://sherbornewharf.co.uk/boat-trips/waterbus/">Ariel the Waterbus</a>. Of course you have to check out the home of chocolate at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cadburyworld.co.uk/en">Cadbury World</a>&nbsp;– take a tour and see how it&#8217;s made, sample some goodies and then stock up at the onsite shop.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-culture">CULTURE</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.sellymanormuseum.org.uk/">Selly Manor</a>&nbsp;has been a museum since 1916 and is great for a look around. Worth a look too is the is the&nbsp;<a href="https://barber.org.uk/">Barber Institute of Fine Arts&nbsp;</a>which is home to some really interesting exhibitions. Pop over to the University of Birmingham and visit&nbsp;<a href="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/facilities/lapworth-museum/index.aspx">The Lapworth Museum of Geology</a>&nbsp;too – it’s a hidden gem and you can easily while away a few hours exploring. For a classic music fix, enjoy a concert in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/bramall/index.aspx">Bramall Music Building</a>. There’s also the&nbsp;<a href="https://macbirmingham.co.uk/">Midlands Art Centre</a>&nbsp;with its exhibitions, workshops and performances. The stunning&nbsp;<a href="http://rowheathpavilion.co.uk/">Rowheath Park and Pavilion</a>&nbsp;was opened in 1924 by the Cadbury family and hosts the Bournville Food and Drink festival and ‘Street Food Fridays.</p>

<p>Work is currently underway to develop a station in Stirchley, but the closest is Bournville, which has a frequent train service running to Birmingham New Street (with good links to London) every 15 mins or so. Driving to the big smoke will take around 2 hrs.</p>
