First up is the <a href="https://www.squaremeal.co.uk/restaurants/best/uk-top-100-restaurants_238" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SquareMeal 100</a>, a list that’s created from a compilation of diner votes and in-house restaurant critic opinion, with seven Warwickshire and West Midlands eateries included. Fancy seeing who on our patch topped the list? Drum roll please&#8230;..

<a href="https://hamptonmanor.com/grace-savour/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Grace &amp; Savour</a>, the restaurant of the gorgeous Hampton Manor retreat in Solihull, is a new entry and came in top of the list. So if you&#8217;re still sobbing about the closure of Peel&#8217;s then head here and try out it&#8217;s famous 15 course tasting menu.

Elsewhere in our neck of the woods was Birmingham-based Indian restaurant <a href="https://opheem.com">Opheem</a> which came in at number seven. Flavours are inspired by Brummy chef Aktar Islam&#8217;s childhood growing up with immigrant Bangladeshi parents. He aims to take flavours from his youth and transform them into dishes worthy of ‘kings and emperors’. Well, if it&#8217;s good enough for them&#8230;.

Cool neighbourhood eatery <a href="https://cartersofmoseley.co.uk">Carters of Moseley</a> was voted number 51 &#8211; with its informal dining style and &#8216;free-spirited&#8217; cooking by chef Brad Carter bagging it a place. It also helped snag Moseley a place on Muddy&#8217;s Top 250 <a href="https://warks.muddystilettos.co.uk/best-places-to-live/west-midlands/moseley/">Best Places to Live</a> guide.

Next up in our &#8216;hood&#8217; is rock n&#8217; roll restaurant <a href="https://www.wearethewilderness.co.uk">The Wilderness</a> in Brum at number 61. Expect eccentric pairings in a quirky all-black setting. You might recognise chef-patron Alex Claridge from season 13 of Great British Menu, and he&#8217;s known locally for his local and seasonal tasting menus.

I reckon you were expecting this one &#8211; <a href="https://www.adamsrestaurant.co.uk">Adam&#8217;s Restaurant</a> in Birmingham is no stranger to awards, winning a slew of them including a Michelin star &#8211; it bagged spot 65 on the list. Choose from a three-course set menu or six-course tasting menu, but the best way to enjoy it is at the chef&#8217;s table, where you can take in the buzz of the kitchen too.

Elsewhere in the city there&#8217;s <a href="https://purnellsrestaurant.com">Purnell&#8217;s</a> at number 72. The flagship restaurant of local chef Glynn Purnell, is one of the OG&#8217;s in Birmingham and still as popular as ever. It&#8217;s pretty relaxed with a fun edge &#8211; want to know what I mean? Try ordering the &#8216;Brummy Tapas&#8217;.

Last up is Peruvian restaurant <a href="https://chakana-restaurant.co.uk">Chakana</a>, which cinched the 97th spot. It&#8217;s just out of the city centre with chef Robert Ortiz cooking up delicious food from his home country of Peru. He ditched Lima for Brum in 2019 with the dream of setting up his own place. And he doesn&#8217;t stop at the food, drinks are all inspired by the country too &#8211; try both with the nine course tasting menu complete with pre-dinner cocktail.

Hardens was the other restaurant guide to release its favourites, the <a href="https://www.hardens.com/top-100-uk-restaurants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harden’s Top 100 Best UK Restaurants list 2023</a>. It put the two Michelin-starred Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles in Perthshire as the UK’s top restaurant. A French-Scottish hybrid, its all about imaginative seasonal cooking and is definitely a special-night-out kind of place, just like the West Midlands inclusions – our very own <a href="https://www.adamsrestaurant.co.uk">Adam&#8217;s Restaurant</a> and <a href="https://opheem.com">Opheem</a>. Restaurants only get considered for inclusion in the Hardens list if they go way beyond offering a good meal, so interiors, wine list, views, service, and sustainability all come into play, so it’s no surprise, with Aktar Islam and Adam Stokes&#8217; eye for detail, that both restaurants ticked the boxes.
