Get ready to go outside: SPFs for every skin type
The sun is (just) starting to make itself felt and while that brings happiness, joy and vitamin D, it also means more time outdoors. Get prepped with the best facial SPFs.
Speak to anyone who knows the slightest thing about skincare and they will tell you to wear SPF. Every day. Without fail. However, if during lockdown, you’ve gone days without leaving the house (no judgement here), you might have found that your ritualistic sun cream application went the same way as your underwired bras and non-drinking days: down the pan.
But summer is coming and outdoor days beckon and therefore it’s time to get your SPF game on. Here are Muddy’s favourites. To use everyday.
Saltee Daily Protection Formula SPF50, 50ml
There’s loads to love about Saltee’s formula in that it’s vegan, cruelty free, paraben free, Oxybenzone and Octinoxate free (making it better for sealife) and can be used as a primer or by itself for a lovely, glowy sheen.
La Mer The SPF 50 UV Protecting Fluid, 50ml
Lightweight but yet powerful, this luxurious number is quick to absorb and designed to wear in between your moisturiser and make-up. (And looks fab on your dressing table.)
Sisley Super Soin Solaire Facial SPF 50+, 40ml
This multitasking formula is designed to protect against the harmful rays of the sun but with a full host of unique active ingredients, it also means that it fights free radicals, moisturises and prevents against dark spots and wrinkles. Win.
Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream SPF 30, 50ml
A good one for all harsh weather conditions, not just baking sun, this light cream keeps replenishing the skin with moisture over 24 hours to help keep it smooth and healthy looking.
Lancome Soleil Bronzer SPF 50 BB Cream, 50ml
Cut down the bottles in your cabinet with this: a sun cream and a BB cream. The subtle tint evens out imperfections and gives a satiny finish, all the while protecting against those pesky UV rays.
Origins GinZing™ SPF 40 Energy-Boosting Tinted Moisturiser, 50ml
This oil-free tinted moisturiser promises to hydrate, perfect, protect against the sun and energise your skin thanks to coffee infused in the formula. Smooth onto your skin first thing and look 100% better than you feel.
Temple Spa Life Defence SPF Moisturiser, 50ml
Spending hours at the screen? Aren’t we all? Well, Temple Spa’s Life Defence moisturiser promises to protect against blue light inside as well as, erm, natural light outside. All while keeping your skin moisturised. Clever, eh?
Estee Lauder Perfectionist Pro Multi-Defence Aqua UV Gel SPF 50 with 8 Anti-Oxidants, 30ml
If you spend time inside air-conditioned buildings as well as out and about, this Estee Lauder number could be your best bet. It fights UV, pollution and dehydration so for city gals, it works three ways.
Lancaster Sun Perfect Infinite Glow Illuminating Cream SPF 50, 50ml
If you like to subtly shimmer when you walk down the street, in the manner of a Californian supermodel, this *might* make you resemble one. The Full Light Technology blurs dark spots and wrinkles while a glow booster promises to illuminate the skin.
Elta MD SPF 46 UV Clear, 50ml
This formula is a beauty editor favourite and particularly good for sensitive skin as it can handle acne and rosacea. However, only currently sold in the UK through Amazon.
Thank You Farmer Sun Project Water Cream, 50ml
This cult product is renowned for its lovely application and lightness on the skin – which will go some way to explaining why it’s often sold out and waiting to restock. Buy when you can.
Kate Somerville UNCOMPLIKATED SPF 50 SOFT FOCUS SPRAY
Most physical sunscreens contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which can leave a white pigment on darker skins. Not so with a mist SPF: we also like that this one can be sprayed directly over a full face of makeup to set it (two birds, one spray).
