Stuck in a hair rut or need a bit of a pamper session? We hear ya sister. Fear not, Muddy Warwickshire's Georgina has been to check out the coolest salon in town, and you're gonna leave feeling and looking a million dollars.
New year, new you? After skipping a few visits to the hairdressers I can admit feeling knackered after Christmas and channeling the ‘new you’ mantra when I visited ILLUMI in Studley. Turns out a trip to these guys was exactly what was needed. Here’s what I thought…
This place gave me some serious tropical vibes with bamboo at every turn and houseplants galore. A bit of Bali on Alcester Road? I’m here for it. It’s right near Bumbles Coffee House too – so pop in once you’re done to show off your new ‘do and have a locally roasted Monsoon Estates coffee.
ILLUMI uses all Aveda products, which if you don’t know are organic and vegan, so you can tick the sustainability box as well as feeling good about yourself. Result. I was so impressed I stocked up on several products before I left (and they smell lush!)
MY HAIR AND SKIN ISSUE
My hair has always been verging on the frizzier side of things and I’ve never been one to enjoy going to the hairdressers, feeling it was a bit more of a chore than a treat. To top it off after a busy few months I felt really run down and both my skin and hair were looking a bit dull and lacklustre – I needed (and deserved in my book!) a bit of a pamper.
My first treatment was a 75 minute dual exfoliation signature facial and it was pure bliss. The facial includes two intensive exfoliations – a peel and a skin refiner. It also includes a Ayurvedic facial yoga massage to help get those products in and while they’re working their magic, I enjoyed a relaxing Thai foot massage with sweet Jasmine and grapeseed oil. Aaaand breathe.
Aaron who carried out the treatment was great at what he does – his diary is chocka six weeks in advance for facials (I’ve already got my next one booked in!). The treatment promises to leave your skin with the ‘ultimate glow’, and not wanting to big myself up too much but I’m sure we can all agree I’m looking prettyyyyyyy glowy.
Next up on this whistle stop feel-good makeover was a cut and finish with salon owner Neil. I’ve been to some lovely hairdressers before, but he’s next level. He wants every client to come away feeling like they’ve had some escapism from everyday life, which I can hands down say I did. Before all haircuts all clients are offered Reiki, which I’ve never had before but I definitely benefited from his positive healing energy. More please!
BEFORE & AFTER
It’s all very well reading reviews, but we all know the proof is in the before and after photo, right? So here you go. I think we can call that a transformation. I struggle to find the time going to the hairdressers with two kids and a busy job and generally try and get in and out as quick as I can. This was totally different. I absolutely revelled in the cranial massage while having my hair washed.
Having my hair done at ILLUMI really felt like something for me and a real treat. I’ve also walked away with a ton of tips from Neil on how to manage my frizzy hair and he’s given me hope it can look nicer.
An absolute steal for the quality. A cut and finish starts at £33 and a 75 minute facial costs £75 – and my skin has looked its best self since.
THE MUDDY VERDICT
GOOD FOR: If you like a pamper with your haircut and know your ‘really good’ facials from your ‘ok’ ones (we’ve all been there), this is the place for you. Also, if the use of vegan and organic products is important to you (hello Veganuary) then check these guys out.
NOT FOR: If you want an ‘in and out’ haircut and aren’t bothered about the feel good factor (erm, what?) then maybe give this one a miss.
