WHY?

The jewel in the crown of this historic market town is the romantic castle ruins, once home to Robert Dudley, whose alleged love affair with Elizabeth I was explored by Cate Blanchett and Joseph Fiennes in the 1998 film Elizabeth. The monarch visited the castle several times. But it’s not all raunchy history – Kenilworth has a Michelin-starred restaurant, some great indie shops, its own arts festival, a food festival, two community theatres and the annual Two Castles Run. It’s also close to the University of Warwick in Coventry.

Scoff and quaff at Michelin-starred gastropub The Cross with its lovely outdoor terrace where reservations are taken up to three months in advance for larger bookings. Its retained its star for more than nine years under chief-director Adam Bennett. Independent bistros include Harringtons-on-the Hill, Lil Greens, The Station House@Poms Bar and newbie French-inspired eaterie Charlotte. Like Indian food? Indian Edge has a contemporary pan-Asian menu while this year Indian Ark rebranded after 12 years as The Ark, an urban culinary restaurant and steakhouse, moving to bigger, contemporary space on The Square.

For Thai food check out Thai Fusion menu at Nur Nur Paradise and Thai Kitchen. There’s no shortage of great cafés – some of our faves are new Greek cafe My Greek Station, Forrest, Coffee on the Corner, Time for Tea, and Farmer’s Fayre, just outside town at Stoneleigh Park. Popular pubs and bars include the Clarendon Arms, The Almanack and the Virgins & Castle. Nearby is Ansty Hall‘s Twine Restaurant now under Rob Palmer, Michelin-star chef at former restaurant Peel’s, Hampton Manor (now the Michelin-starred Grace & Savour).

Other independents worth visiting include La ARI Italian Deli & Cafe with its Pistachio gelato, Cannolo Siciliano and olive oils, The Farthing Gallery and Tea Room for gifts and cake; artisan gift shop The Artibus Yard; the fantastic Farmers Fayre farm shop and café at Stoneleigh Park; and third-generation family-run Smith’s Nurseries & Garden Centre. Luxe outdoor designer outlet Bicester Village is under an hour away.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

This is a great town for runners. There’s a popular running group and Kenilworth Castle is the end point for the Two Castles Run from Warwick. There’s a lovely park, Abbey Fields, with kids play areas and tennis courts, and walking routes around the castle, Kenilworth Greenway and Crackley Woods Nature Reserve. A multi-million pound refurbishment project is underway at Abbey Fields Swimming Pool and Castle Farm Leisure Centre.

Get on your bike and rack up the miles with the local cycling club and you’re just a stone’s throw from the fabulous The Wellbeing Cabin, which combines eight holistic treatments for the ultimate in relaxation (here’s our review). If you’re looking for the full spa experience then head to Mallory Court’s Elan Spa, or Ardencote.

COMMUNITY

There are two community theatres here, The Priory and the Talisman, both always packed to the rafters at Christmas. The town has a popular weekly market and an annual firework display at Kenilworth Castle. Eco-warriors can join the Friends of Abbey Fields group, which helps care for this lovely space and runs walks and events such as bat and moth spotting.

NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden is the big attraction – you can climb to the top of the 18m tower and see Elizabeth’s previously derelict private chamber, accessible after English Heritage built a viewing platform. Abbey Fields, a 68-acre park, is in the centre of town, with a lake overlooking the castle, tennis courts and a children’s play area. It’s great for walks, picnics and sledging in the snow. The stately Grade I-listed Stoneleigh Abbey, with its links to Jane Austen, is a 10-minute drive.

From Baddesley Clinton to Packwood House, Charlecote Park with its roaming deers and the newly opened Coventry Charterhouse, there’s heaps of National Trust properties on your doorstep for nature walks, historic house visits and family-friendly events.

CULTURE

Have your roomy pants on standby, the Kenilworth Food Festival is always a popular event. The November fireworks display at Kenilworth Castle is also an annual highlight. Kenilworth has two small but very popular independent theatres on its doorstep: the Priory Theatre and Talisman Theatre, which also shows cinema screenings. In nearby Coventry, you can see home-produced and some of the big touring shows at The Belgrade and Albany theatres as well as live music, more eclectic theatre, dance, comedy, film and art at Warwick Arts Centre, on the University of Warwick campus plus the RSC in nearby Stratford, needs no introduction. Compton Verney, an award-winning art gallery housed in a Grade I listed Georgian mansion is just 20-minutes away by car.

NURSERIES

Little Cubs Nursery, Creative Flair Nursery, Bright Horizons and Field House are all ‘Good’ nurseries in town. Kenilworth Nursery School and Castle Nursery Pre-School for 0-3s on Priory Road are both rated Outstanding by Ofsted. Little Crackers is an ‘excellent’ in-house nursery at independent Crackley Hall School. From January 2026 it will be adding ‘Ladybirds’ and the nursery will then cater for babies and children from nine-months-old to pre-school. In easy reach is Little Grange Nursery, which recently opened in Rugby.

SCHOOLS

There are several good and Outstanding state primary and secondary schools in town and nearby, including Kenilworth School and Sixth Form. Crackley Hall School is a feeder primary for Catholic co-ed independent secondary Princethorpe College, plus Rugby School and Bilton Grange Prep are within easy reach, with independents in nearby Leamington Spa, Warwick and Coventry too.

Independent day school The Kingsley School, in neighbouring Leamington Spa was founded by Rose, the daughter of Victorian author Charles Kingsley, offers an all-through school experience locally from aged three up to Sixth Form. From Sept 2025 it’s extending co-education from the Prep School, welcoming boys into Senior School and Sixth Form.

Other fee-paying options include Arnold Lodge School in Leamington; and Warwick Prep School, Warwick Junior School (boys), Warwick Senior School (boys) and King’s High (girls) offering an all-through education experience (with boarding options) on one campus in Warwick.

Legend has it that Kenilworth Castle is haunted by the ghost of Sir Fulke Greville, who was brutally murdered within its walls.

COMMUTE

Vastly improved since the reopening of the town’s train station, with connections to Coventry, Birmingham, and London. Journey time to London is under 90 mins.
