Best places to go ice-skating this Christmas

Ice ice baby! 2020’s going to be quite a different festive experience. Many outdoor ice rinks nationally have chosen to cancel events this winter – but in our neck of the woods, a handful of attractions have decided to go ahead and bring some much-needed Covid-secure festive fun to the region. Nothing like a whizz around a rink to make you feel Christmassy – and a glass of mulled wine afterwards.
Warwick Castle, Dec 5-Jan 17
Set against one of Britain’s best-known castles, this outdoor ice-skating rink proved so incredibly popular in 2019 it returns for a second year, as part of the Christmas at the Castle celebrations. Located in front of the iconic East Front, you’ll be able to glide in this magical historic setting day or night. Also enjoy the castle’s first ever Christmas Light Trail – new for 2020! Inside in the Great Hall there will be a 20ft-high Christmas tree and the State Rooms will be festively decked out.
Coventry Glides, Dec 4 – Jan 10
This brand new outdoor ice-rink will see the historic ruins of Coventry Cathedral transformed into a winter wonderland! Due to the second lockdown the scheduled opening of this new winter attraction has been delayed slightly but with the ice-rink running for an extra week.
It’s been created by Coventry Business Improvement District (BID) and Coventry Cathedral with support from Coventry City Council with Covid safety measures in mind, including timed slots for skaters, reduced skater capacity, mandatory facemasks for all skaters – except for those who are exempt – and cleaning in between skating session.
Snowdome, Tamworth, re-opening from Dec 3
This all-year-round indoor snow, ice and leisure attraction is well-known for it’s Santa’s Winter Wonderland which is back for a 16th year and a Covid-secure experience with snow slides, falling snow, sledging, snow tubes as well as the UK’s only ice track surrounding an ice skating rink.
Planet Ice, Coventry, re-opening Dec 3
A year round ice-rink offering Skate Excellent and Hockey Excellence courses as well as public skate sessions. Home to Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey Club.
The Queen’s House, Greenwich, South London, Dec 5 – Jan 24 2021
Set within the spacious grounds of Royal Museums Greenwich and a UNESCO World Heritage Site this outdoor rink has amazing views across the River Thames towards the Canary Wharf and Greenwich Royal Park. You can combine with a visit to the Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, Queen’s House and National Maritime Museum.
Hampton Court Palace, Surrey, Dec 5 – Jan 17
It’s hoped 45 minute skating sessions will be available to book in the gardens of his grand Tudor palace – Henry VIII’s historic home. The Covid-secure open-air ice rink also has an Ice Rink Bar selling food and festive drinks.
